Hobby-horse

People, people, people – get Sky Sports. That’s my catch-all catch-phrase for people who need a hobby. People get het up about the silliest things: this blog being a case in point.

This is my blog. I own it. I paid for the website and it’s generally frothy – even silly – in tone, because that’s the kind of place I want it to be. It’s very clear that what’s discussed here is my stupid opinion, and that the things that are said here are generally said to get laughs, almost never at anyone else’s expense; not always easy to achieve.

Recently, somebody I don’t know got in touch with me about a line in one of the blogs. I’m not going to say which one, because I don’t want to give it too much airtime. But basically, it was a throwaway line about something that happened ages ago which was openly and publicly discussed at the time, and was certainly the view of myself and anyone I was in contact with. In fact, I remember reading more than one published article at the time debating the issue and coming to similar conclusions to the one I threw away in the blog. So, it was my opinion, but not just my opinion: there had. in the past, been discussions of numbers that pointed to its being actual fact.

This person’s experience didn’t tally with mine, so they wrote to me. It was a very curt note, which asked me to amend the line. I did so, purely because this is entertainment: I’m not out to have political battles. If I made someone unhappy or uncomfortable, that’d be all wrong. It was an easy change; the wording this person didn’t agree with was soon edited. However, I also amended it to strengthen the fact that what I said was just my opinion, but was held to be true by more than just me. In the end, I softened the fact, but didn’t excise it because I believe it to be true and hey, it’s my blog.

Add to that the fact that this blog is only read by you 3, I don’t get paid for it, it’s not a newspaper, broadcaster or public service announcement (nor does it claim to represent any) and many have said that I’d be within my rights to just tell my pernickety friend to shove it. But I don’t want to do that: all I do want to say is, “Get Sky Sports.” But that’s just my opinion.

Come to Lenny Beige at the Pigalle tonight, Dec 21 or London Comedy Improv on Dec 30. Or don’t.
